Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Henry Brougham was born and raised in Edinburgh, attended Edinburgh University, practiced law in the city, and co-founded the influential Edinburgh Review. In 1803 he moved to London, becoming associated with the radical left wing of the Whig Party. He also practiced law in London, and was appointed to the House of Commons in 1810, establishing himself as one of the leading radicals in Parliament and holding several important positions.
